The letter read: Dear Astrid, I hope this letter finds you well, my dear friend! I’ve been meaning to write to you for some time now, but the whirlwind of my travels has kept me quite busy. "Can I read the letter aloud?" He asks me while scanning through the letter I gave to him. "Yes! It is yours," I exclaim. He opens the letter and read it loudly while sitting beside me. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LEONEL. I WISH YOU THE BEST FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY AND KNOW THAT I AM ALWAYS BE YOUR ANNOYING FRIEND THAT YOU LIKE THE MOST.

I truly owed my best friend the world. Forcing myself to maintain some speck of civility, I calmly opened the letter and pulled out the paper inside. I scanned the document quickly, and then again slower, as if that might change the results.

It felt good to give them something, after everything they have given to me. That’s why, in that letter, I wrote Jack and Shirley first, and then Mom later. Wow, that got intense. And long.
