I pried the seal with my thumbnail open and the first line shook me. Little sister. This was a letter from Mara, my eldest sister. They had not called me that since I was born. I read slowly, because some words need the mercy of air between them. I read twice when the lines blurred. My eyes ran over the page: the breaking and the begging, the promise that they had felt every lash of the Goddess’s hand since the night I fled, that the pack had withered without a Beta’s house to anchor it, that men who once bowed had bartered them into debt, that winter chewed bone.

We couldn’t find the chest and… I got greedy. Forgetting my own sister, my own blood. And, I’m sorry. I regret my doings, Felicia. Author’s POV… Dear Mabel, I know that with this seal, I ought to use official terms but this is not a formal letter. It’s a letter I decided to write to someone whom I now consider as my sister and friend. You must be shocked to read that all these words are coming from me, Megan, your evil sister-in-law. I, myself would have never thought I would be this apologetic to you one day, but I guess life has a way of turning things around, huh?

Mom & Dad, Please don't be sad. Even if I never return, never see you again, just know that if I ever turned out to be half the amazing parents you both were, then I'd be proud. I know you two will be just fine without me because neither of you ever let sadness bring you down. You always chose to love over anything bad. and, in writing this, please love Carla. I know you do but love her just a little bit more. Carla had to wipe away her tears, afraid to wet her sisters' letter as she read her sisters' heart being poured out onto the crumbled piece of paper.

“Look at these. These are all of my love letters returned to me by Brother Finn.” When the sisters opened them to read the contents, they found that a ‘language teacher’ had attentively marked each letter—all the way from its format to the punctuation and grammar. Not only did Brother Finn mark the letters, he even left comments on them. [You should be reading more books instead of writing love letters. She was talking about Lorenzo like he was some misunderstood teddy bear. "Bitch, you better be joking." My eyes burned. Not because I was sad—well, maybe a little—but mostly because I was furious. I missed her. Damn it, I missed her like hell. But I also wanted to throttle her for making me go through this cat-and-mouse bullshit. I wasn’t a fucking detective. I was a pissed-off sister left in the dark while everyone else played chess with my life. And how the fuck did this letter even end up on my bed? Every goddamn time. Locked doors, no windows open, no fucking sign of anyone. It was like the damn thing teleported. Magic mail from sisterland.

I let the envelopes, and photos fall in the center of the room. “Who does these belong to?” I asked, and Mina opened her mouth to speak, but I raised a hand, shutting her. The girls took turns looking at it, and finally Sandra recognized the letters. “It’s for my little sister.” She said, looking at me with confusion. “Your what?” “My sister writes these everyday, and sends them to me, thinking I can give one to Derel everyday.” She replied softly. “Oh really?” I scoffed.

Something about it felt off, but I figured it was another well-wisher or maybe a late congratulations card. I opened it in the living room, sunlight streaming through the big windows. The letter inside was on cheap paper, the ink a little smudged like it had been folded and refolded a lot. My stomach twisted before I even read the first line. Dearest Eve, I stared at the words. Dearest. Like we were still sisters who shared secrets and clothes and late-night talks instead of whatever broken thing we had become.

It was because of this email that I learned about all the struggles my family had gone through over the past year. [Back then, we always said you were the strong one and that you could handle anything. Daphne was delicate; she needed looking after. So we gave her everything. We gave her all our attention and money, forgetting that you were our child too. We forgot that you also needed to be loved, and to be supported. [You must’ve felt so heartbroken on that day you saw your sister’s post. I’m only now starting to understand. It took me this long. And now it’s too late.

I have to ask about this to them. I write a letter to them both. Even if I don’t get back a reply, I hope they will be able to warn us if it’s something bad. I know for sure it is indeed something bad! I am sorry my sisters. I will tell you ones I have my reply from mom and dad. There are so many things I want to ask them! But for now, this is important. I never had or saw a vision like Bonny Markham’s nightmare. I need answers! Or at least a warning!
