Chapter 3

Penulis: Fleeting
I studied the corners of the cage carefully, shaking it over and over until I found one loose metal bar.

I pulled out a shard from my broken laptop and started grinding it against that spot again and again.

A shadow suddenly fell over me.

Hope surged, and I looked up fast, only to see a skinny, bony stray cat. I reached out, trying to pet it, but it bared its teeth and hissed.

I let out a quiet sigh and murmured to myself, "My classmates were scared I'd ruin their rafting trip, so they locked me in here. My phone doesn't have any signal. I can't reach my parents. You're my only shot. If you could find a cop…"

My voice trailed off. I sat back down and kept sawing at the bar.

Blood slid down the metal, dripping slowly onto the ground.

The cat in front of me gradually relaxed, its guard lowering as it let out a soft meow.

I quickly poured some water into my palm and held it out carefully. It hesitated for a second, then lapped it all up.

Looking into its bright eyes, I pulled out a few bills, wrote SOS on them, and tucked them into its worn collar.

"Hey, little guy, remember how to get back here. Find someone to help me, okay? I'll convince my parents to take you in."

It let out a small cry, then darted off.

Three hours passed before I finally managed to cut through that loose bar. I gripped the empty bottle in my hand, tears spilling uncontrollably.

Mom, Dad… Even after getting a second chance, I still couldn't save myself.

The application deadline was getting close, and I still couldn't even get out of this rusted cage.

The air around me warped in the heat. The scorching temperature baked me until my consciousness started slipping away.

Something rough brushed against my eyes again and again. I instinctively reached up and grabbed at it.

When I slowly opened my eyes, I realized it was the same cat I had trusted with that huge task earlier.

"She's awake. Good thing we got here in time, or she could've died from heatstroke!"

Someone gently lifted me out of the cage.

"What happened here? How did a kid end up locked in a place like this?"

The sound of police sirens filled my ears, and everything went dark again.

My father rushed to my bedside, his voice tight with panic.

"Katrina, the moment I got the call from the police, I came straight here. Where's Terry? Didn't he promise me he'd look out for you?"

As I thought back to what happened this morning, tears slipped down my face before I could stop them.

I saw the exhaustion in my father's eyes and shook my head.

"Dad, I'm fine. Just…give me my laptop. I haven't finished my applications yet."

I couldn't trust Terry. I was scared he had already picked the worst possible colleges for me.

As soon as I got the laptop, my hands trembled while I logged into the application site and changed everything back to the ones I actually wanted.

Terry had probably forgotten those promises he once made to me a long time ago.

I had just handed the laptop back when I saw my father holding up his phone.

"How would Katrina know where the others are? What rafting livestream? I'm heading over right now!"

My face went pale. "Dad, don't go. My stomach hurts."

He immediately sat back down beside me and poured me some water.

If those ungrateful classmates twisted the story like last time, saying I tricked them into going, their parents would tear my father apart.

This time, I wasn't getting involved, no matter what happened to them.

"You're all top students! You've got plenty of chances! I only took this one. Worst case, you start college a year later. It's not like it'll ruin your lives."The selfishness in her voice set everyone off again. The student whose eyes had been injured slammed her to the ground and started hitting her, completely losing control."You selfish trash! You ruined my eyes. You ruined my whole life! I can't be a pilot anymore. You destroyed my dream…"Megan, who had been following everything in the group chat, finally rushed into the studio. The police, holding back their anger, pulled Hayley away."Yesterday, you led people to break into someone's house, and today, you faked a suicide attempt. How could you do something like this?" Even now, Hayley still had a smile on her face."They're just jealous. I'm about to get into Northbridge University."After that day, the students involved in the fight were taken into custody, and their families came to meet them there. The day accept

My classmates had gathered downstairs at the hotel, waiting to apologize.I let out a quiet sigh and went down to tell them to leave. These proud, straight-A students now stood there with red eyes, mumbling one after another."I'm sorry…""I shouldn't have believed Hayley and Terry so easily… They kept talking about how fun rafting would be, and I just stopped thinking…""Katrina… Can you help us figure something out? I still want to go to college…"People watching nearby looked at them like they couldn't believe it."You're all grown up, and you don't even have basic judgment? A few words, and you're led around like idiots?""What do you mean, help you figure something out? As long as you have your laptop, you've got the whole day to submit your applications. You didn't take it seriously, and now you want someone else to fix it?"That was when it hit me. Back when we gathered at the school gate, everyone had their bags with them. The top students flushed red."Hayley said u

The moment I realized I had come back, I started watching Hayley and Terry closely. When the bus showed up, the driver carried himself in a way that felt oddly similar to Hayley. Before they grabbed me, I quietly asked Steven to keep an eye on him. The second I got to the hospital, Steven sent me a video. In it, a man who looked about 70% like Hayley was pouring himself a glass of liquor. He sat there, smug, laughing with relatives around the table."Hayley really knows how to play this. She landed me a nice little business deal. Block off the river right by our town a bit, and money just rolls in. Call it rafting, and I get to charge 60 bucks a head. All I've gotta do is hand out a few cheap float tubes. She even had me pay to hire a driver. Please! I just throw on a mask, and the money comes right back to me."The way he bragged made the parents watching the video grind their teeth in anger. At that moment, the officers who had been investigating stepped forward with more evide

I let out a bitter laugh, my teeth clenched tightly."Terry, you never saved me. You're a liar. Stop dreaming."After I died in my last life, I found out the truth. The one who had actually saved me back then was my childhood friend, Steven Barlow, the one who had always stayed quietly by my side. The door lock finally gave way. The parents stormed into my house, fists coming down on me from every direction. Then sirens cut through the chaos. Police rushed in and forced the mob back.I caught Steven's eye across the room. We exchanged a quiet look, and I gave a small nod."Everyone, can you just hear me out? I really had nothing to do with this."At my words, they paused their movements.I pulled out my score report and held it out to them."My grades are near the bottom of the class. I'm way behind the top students. Even if they missed their applications, it wouldn't suddenly benefit me."They snatched the paper from my hand and passed it around. Then a familiar voice cut t

The students who had just survived finally realized they had missed the application deadline.I watched quietly as they clung to each other.Weren't they all from well-off families? Didn't college used to feel like something they could take or leave?A few of them walked over to my bed, crying as they apologized."Katrina, we're sorry… We thought Terry was just messing with you. He said that the lock was fake…""It's my fault, too. I didn't dare stand up to him, so I just went along with the rafting trip."I turned my head away, not wanting to look at them now that it was over. The incident spread fast across the news. Parents started canceling business deals with Hayley's family one after another. They even showed up at her house together, demanding she take responsibility for what happened. That night, I saw Hayley on the news, lying in a hospital bed, her face pale as reporters crowded around her.She bit her lip, wiping at the tears in the corner of her eyes before speakin

I grabbed my phone and quickly searched for my classmates' livestream. On the screen, Hayley was holding her phone up, laughing as she floated down a wild river with Terry and the others, all of them lounging in inflatable tubes. Our homeroom teacher, Megan Reed, had already found the stream and was flooding the comments.[There's only half an hour left to submit your applications. Why aren't you all filling them out yet?]The moment Hayley saw that, she clutched her stomach and stood up.She rushed back to the bus, pulled her laptop from the overhead compartment, and filled out her applications as fast as she could.Seeing that, Megan immediately called Terry."How many times have I said this? Applications have to be submitted on time. And all of you ran off to a dangerous place like that? You're the top class! Every move you make affects the teachers' futures. Are you trying to drag the whole school down with you?"Viewers who stumbled into the stream started spamming the com
