Morning light streamed through the tall windows, scattering across Emilia’s room in golden shards. She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the untouched breakfast tray a maid had delivered hours earlier. The silver dome covered food she couldn’t bring herself to eat. Her lips still tingled from the night before. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t erase the memory of that kiss—her first real kiss stolen as collateral. Emilia gritted her teeth.
