Stephen could not help but furrow his brow upon sensing it. “What’s wrong?” asked Wynton. “This formation was laid out by the Genesis Path. It’s impossible,” Stephen said in disbelief. “The Genesis Path of the new world has recently taken shape. Currently, only James has mastered it, and he has only grasped approximately half of it.”

The frame brightened, pulse syncing not to the pillar this time, but—faintly—to my pen. The air in front of it tasted like ozone. “Of course,” Jax’s voice drifted from farther down the hall, strained but wry. “They have a ‘let’s try to blow it up’ door.” He and Selene were silhouettes between their own arches, faces shadowed. “This one’s new,” I said. The Admin’s voice hummed around us, tight with static. “UNWRITTEN PATHS ARE UNSTABLE,” it said. “RECOMMEND AVOIDANCE. HIGH RISK. LOW PREDICTABILITY.”

Then— “Accepted.” Kane nodded. “Do it.” Dominic moved immediately. “I’ll start modifying pathway algorithms.” Arden added, “I’ll monitor for instability.” Cassius muttered, “Here we go again.” I focused deeper. Reaching into the network. Not to control. Not to command. But to guide. The pathways began to shift. Not dramatically. Not all at once. But enough. Routes changed. Connections rerouted. Patterns broken. The seeds— Reacted. “They’re adjusting,” Dominic said.

Then— “Explain.” I stare at both paths. Feeling. Listening. The left path— cold. Empty. Calculated. The right— unstable. Chaotic. Alive. “It wants to see what I choose,” I whisper. “Order or chaos.” “And?” I take a step. Not left. Not right. Forward. Straight between them. The space resists immediately. Violent. Pushing back. “Invalid path,” the whisper echoes. “Good,” I reply. Energy surges through me.

“Then we can’t stay here. If the Deep’s using the old Gates, we have to find the next one before it does.” Kael met her gaze. “The Northern Path.” Her brow furrowed. “That’s frozen ground. Abandoned since the War.” “Exactly. The Deep wouldn’t expect us to go there.” She stared at him, weighing the risk. Then, quietly, “You’re serious.” “Completely.” Aria exhaled, the corner of her mouth twitching despite the gravity of it all. “You always pick the worst possible paths.” His lips curved faintly. “Only the ones worth walking.”
