“But fire is fun.” I yank on his hand gently to make sure I have his attention. “No. Fire is dangerous. Fire hurts people. It can burn you and melt your skin right off like butter. Do you understand?” He nods, but I see a flare of defiance in there. It makes me sigh. This will not be his last fire. Not by a long shot. “If you want to play with fire, you have to wait and only do it with me or Dad, okay? Promise me.”

“I couldn’t find any other books that mention anything about the Fire God.” I slid my fingers closer, then stopped. My hand hovered over it. Maybe I should wait for the King to open it. I glanced sideways at him. He wasn’t smiling. Right now, his mouth was set, sharper than his eyes. “So,” I said, because silence was worse. “This book takes us where, exactly?” Jaxon looked at me for a long second before he shook his head and answered. “The Fire God’s territory.” My throat tightened. “Is it another planet?” I asked, pursing my lips.

“Me.” “No,” I shouted. “I will not let you.” Orion laughed again but it was hollow. “You see now. The fire takes what it wants.” The boy placed his glowing hand over my chest. I gasped as warmth spread through me. I saw flashes of the future. Flames and crowns. Wolves bowing. Blood and ash. A throne of fire. I pulled back shaking. “Stop.” “You have a choice,” the boy said gently. “Bind me to the fire and seal it. Or let it take us all.”

Either way, promises were made because it's meant and intended to be done but against this world, breaking such thing is inevitable. So breaking me was your intention? W-What? Nothing.
