I felt dizzied and only had a second to alert Ashton mentally. There’s a bomb in the room! He looked where I motioned him from my head and Stuart got a chance to kick him, hard, on his back. He stumbled a few paces forward but gained his balance. He threw ice around Stuart and his body stood motionlessly, frozen in that particular position. I took Quinn’s head within my hands from behind me and I sent a strong heavy current of the laser tranquilisers to her head. Her grip loosened on my neck and I slid out of it. She stumbled over the broken pieces of the equipment behind her and fell numbly on the floor.

Here I was, nearing the end of my time in college, with no real certainty as to what the hell my next step was. I knew I wanted to get in government in some fashion, State Department, something like that. I knew it would happen or work out eventually, but right now I was feeling pretty low. The gates groaned shut behind us, and the echo of their clang felt like the sealing of fate. We passed beneath the burning chandelier in the entry hall. Its arms stretched like flaming wings, each tipped with a crystal that pulsed faint green. The light swept across us in measured lines, scanning flesh and soul alike. I swallowed as the beams traced my chest. Eren tilted his head toward me. “What is this?” “A scanner,” I answered. My voice trembled. “To gain access to enter the top floors.” “Alright” Uncle Eren answered, with his tone cool, but his eyes were sharp and filled with worry.

Each beep of the machine felt like banketing a small piece of truth. When the scanner jammed—I swear machines do this only when you care—Mora materialized with the calm of a paramedic. “Easy,” she said, loosening the roller, coaxing the paper out like a thorn. “You’re not the first person to think the universe jams precisely to spite them.” “Do I look that obvious?” I asked. “You look like someone with a living question,” she said. “And a deadline.” “You’re good at this.” She tapped her lanyard pins. Scott walked before them as they took the exit. At the far end of the path that led to the gates of the pack, Scarlet stood, arm crossed, lost in deep thought. To make it more creepy, the surrounding lights flickered while others stayed steady. Her shoulders were jerking as she wept, standing alone in front of the tall white building that had withered flowers surrounding it. Lana was about to make her way to her when Scarlet turned and began walking off. Wherever she passed, the bright light in that area twinkled like she was sucking its energy. Also, the pronounced dark clouds around her made it obvious that something was following her.

The blinking red light felt like a pulse in the room steady, ominous, alive. Lola stared at it, her chest tightening with each slow flash. Ryan snatched the tracker from Cole’s hand, fury burning under his skin. “How long has this been here?” His voice was low. Too calm. The kind of calm that came right before something exploded. Cole took a small scanner from his duffel and swept it across the window frame. The scanner beeped immediately sharp, fast, angry.
