Somewhere above, a single light flickered—an angry, isolated spark of violet—followed by the steady, inevitable thud of thousands of unseen, automated feet shifting in the dark, preparing to claim the city.

"But we have to be close. We have to—" Light. Ahead, through the trees, I saw it. Real light. Moonlight and torchlight and the blessed, beautiful glow of Shadowfang's defensive positions at the forest edge. "There!" I practically sobbed with relief. "Ronan, we're almost there!"
