Melody stands at the top of the stairs and looks down at her children and the two dogs in the amber light, and then she closes the door carefully, the way you close a door to a room where someone you love is sleeping. Upstairs the shop is all shadow and salt-smell. Outside, the wind has a voice now. Not a howl—too early for that—but a presence, a register, the bottom note of something that will get louder. The boards over the windows make it dim as dusk in here, though the sky has only just gone to amber.

The lock clicked, loud in the silence. The shower water burned, a desperate attempt to wash away the night. Ava scrubbed her skin red, but his scent lingered. She stared at her flushed face and wide, scared eyes in the steamy mirror. What did I do? Dressed, she avoided her reflection. The room felt charged, heavy with unspoken words. She couldn't face him yet. She needed time, space. Sunlight, sharp and bright, hit Lucas's face. Ava gasped, a tiny sound. "Damn," she whispered, rushing to the window, fumbling with the heavy drapes. She pulled them shut, making the room dim again.

“She wouldn’t hurt Angelica, would she? I mean, she’s just a child. She can’t possibly understand everything that’s going on.” Ember didn’t answer my question right away. She held out her hand and blew softly into her palm. A small ball of flame sputtered to life, illuminating where we stood in the darkness. The light flickered and waned, dancing as its casted shadows along Ember’s high cheekbones and plump lips.

It lunged toward her. “Emily!” I shouted. But she didn’t move. She raised her hand slightly. And the ground answered. A wall of stone shot up between her and the shadow. The shadow slammed into it. And for the first time— It reacted violently. The air around it twisted. The darkness flickered. Like it was unstable. Emily pushed forward. The stone wall cracked— Then surged outward. The shadow broke apart. Not gone. But scattered. Like smoke caught in a strong wind. The pieces pulled back toward the crack in the ground.

The shadow stepped closer, its form rippling like smoke in wind. “Of the one your soul holds above all others.” The air left Ember’s lungs. Kaila recoiled inside her. No. No. NO. Ember staggered backward, shaking her head. “That can’t be right. You’re lying.” The shadow didn’t move. “It is the law that created your world. Only love strong enough to break you can restore the balance.” “No!” Ember shouted, her voice echoing wildly around the chamber. “There must be another way!” The chamber flickered. For a moment, Ember thought everything might crumble. But the shadow remained steady.

Memories of her childhood flashed through Ember’s mind as she navigated through the route leading to the secluded mansion. It had always been her sanctuary, a place where she had felt safe and loved. Now, it was nothing more than a desolate reminder of what she had lost. When Ember finally arrived, she hurriedly parked her car in-between some trees, to keep it away from sight, looking around to make sure, no one was secretly watching, she ran towards the direction of the mansion
