“Wait for me here, I will just get my bag and possibly a coat that matches yours so we are a twin for today” I shake my head at her, giggling. I watched her disappear inside her house before turning my attention to the area. My attention shifted to the residents of the town, who have a physical appearance that is practically solid or toned. They are each going about their own business, some watering and tending to their plants, others tidying their yard, and some simply walking by in both casual and formal attire. I inhale deeply as I tap my feet on the ground while tucking my hands into my coat.

“We’re just going for a walk. Not war.” Domonic didn’t move. But he didn’t stop me either. Good. I stepped around him, Conner following, his hand gently pressing to the small of my back as we moved down the ramp and onto solid land. The town was exactly what I needed. Dusty brick alleys lined with cafés and locals sweeping doorsteps. Small stores cluttered with trinkets and handmade goods. It was all afternoon sunlight and salt air and the smell of grilled fish wafting from the docks. We wandered for hours. I found a tiny glass charm shaped like a fox and picked it up, turning it between my fingers. “I like it,” I said without thought.

I laugh “and don won’t know. Let’s go eat, then we figure out what to do about this situation.” I offer my hand and she takes it, her hand feeling small and delicate, and we make our way out of the cabin into the crisp night air. The scenery changed as I drove, with skyscrapers giving way to suburbs and then the charming small-town aesthetic of Connecticut. Maple-lined streets, white picket fences, and the American dream packaged and tied with a bow. I slowed as I entered the town, following the GPS directions. Main Street looked like something from a Hallmark movie, with quaint storefronts, American flags, and people actually nodding to each other as they passed on the sidewalk. Dad says, slightly embarrassed by the thoughts of my old friends. After breakfast, I head into town, walking along the sidewalks. Dad’s house is only a couple of blocks from downtown, and I feel like I need it. The air is crisp and smells fresh compared to the city. Walking along, I see that none of the houses have changed. The whole town feels like it has been stuck in a bubble that preserves everything perfectly. No one changed the color of the house or even the designs of the yards. People here were happy with what they had and had no plans to change that. When you are born into wealth, I guess things like change are not something that you are worried about with your home or town.

I asked curiously. He shrugged and said simply “We can go back the way we came from and call it a walk. A pretty short one at that. It’s called a town if you didn’t know, it’s not exactly very big, to have many options of where we’d like to take a walk through” I sighed and walked ahead past him, I felt him falling in step easily next to me and I didn’t miss the distance he eliminated between us, the one I was trying to establish from the start.
