It's early enough that the sidewalks aren't crowded yet, just a few human joggers and dog walkers out enjoying the morning. Shawn leads me to a small park a few blocks away. It's nothing fancy—just a patch of green with a walking path, with a couple of benches, and some trees that are just starting to turn with the changing season. We start walking the walking path. The silence stretches between us, not quite comfortable but not hostile either. I glance at him from the corner of my eye. He's walking with his hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable as always. A petty part of me wants to make this difficult for him.

A word that had eluded him for years. He walked with no real destination, past familiar streets that now felt like they belonged to another lifetime. The city was alive laughter spilling from cafés, the rhythm of tires on wet asphalt, strangers carrying flowers and groceries. Life went on, the world unbothered by the fact that his had quietly shifted again. He stopped at the park, the one Amara used to visit on quiet Sundays. The bench by the pond was still there weathered, a little uneven, the wood darkened by time. He sat, placing the book beside him.

I tried to change the subject by probing about the date, but Brax quickly saw through that, and we fell into a comfortable silence. We turned down a street I recognised immediately. We were heading towards one of my favourite parks. As suspected a few moments later, Brax took the turn for the car park. I was excited as I could lose myself for hours walking around the lake and through the woodland trails. Once we were parked up and out of the car, I found myself taking a long deep breath of the woodland air.

Natasha’s POV. The next afternoon, Carol and I decided to visit the park. The air was bright and soft, the kind that makes you feel a little lighter even if you’ve had a long week. Carol said she hadn’t been out for a while and wanted to see what had changed since she’d been away. I could understand that feeling. We walked slowly through the park, watching children play by the swings and couples sitting close together on benches. Carol smiled as she looked around, her eyes lighting up. “I missed this place,” she said softly. “It feels like everything here stayed the same.”

I always do. I find myself in the park, a small oasis carved from the relentless concrete of the city. When I find a parking spot, I pull in without really thinking, muscle memory steering me more than will. I get out and start walking. The sidewalk under my boots is warm from the afternoon sun, and the breeze lifts the edges of my dress as I move aimlessly through town. People pass by, their voices and laughter filling the air, but none of it touches me. When I reach the park, my steps finally slow. The grass is still wet in patches from the morning dew, but the sun has already kissed it dry in places, making it soft and inviting. I step onto it, the earth springy beneath my soles, and inhale deeply.

Mei kept her promise; she walked several paces behind me, blending into the background so effortlessly that I almost forgot I was being shielded by one of the most dangerous security assets in the Vesper network. I strolled down the winding stone paths, enjoying the simple luxury of a lazy morning. Old couples were sitting on green benches reading the newspapers, and a few people were walking their dogs under the shade of the massive oak trees. It was peaceful, a quiet oasis in the middle of a roaring city. As I wandered deeper toward the northern edge of the park, near a line of weathered brick brownstones, a small commotion caught my attention.
