It wasn’t Sam. It wasn’t Michelle. It was calm. Cold. Familiar. “Good evening, John.” Every hair on the back of my neck stood up. Bella grabbed my arm. “Who is that?” The voice laughed softly. “You’ve spent years looking for the leader of the League of Silence.”

I stopped, one hand on the railing. Gone. The voice was gone. I stood there, frozen on the seventh step, my pulse hammering in a body that suddenly felt like a cage. Had I imagined it? Had three years of silence finally broken something in my mind, conjuring a phantom voice from desperation and loneliness? No. I didn't do delusions. I didn't do false hope. I'd heard something. Someone. A voice that had somehow reached me through a curse designed to shut out the entire world.

I turned it and pushed the door open, making sure not to make any noise. The room was dark since the lights were off. I also noticed that Kae was the only one in the room and he was sleeping in his bed. Confused, I turned around to leave but froze when I heard crying. "Please don't die," the voice pleaded in between cries. My eyebrows shot up. I quickly walked over to Kae's sleeping form. Did he just speak?

As I lay there, I heard an unknown voice come forward. “Let me look at her,” the voice said. I had no idea who it was. I did not know what they could do but I did not know if I could trust them. But at this point we had to try anything, “Marly, hold on baby!” I encouraged. But this time I was met with silence. There was no reply … just deafening silence.
