Ben stopped, his chest heaving as he caught his breath, and I collapsed beside him, my body shaking with exhaustion. For a long moment, neither of us spoke. We just sat there, listening to the distant crackle of the fire as it continued its deadly march across the forest below. The heat was still oppressive, but at least we weren’t in immediate danger of being engulfed in flames. After a while, I turned to Ben, my voice barely above a whisper. "Do you think it’s over?" He shook his head, wiping the ash from his face with the back of his hand. "No... fires like this don’t just stop. It’ll keep burning until there’s nothing left."

The crackling fire cast a warm, flickering glow across the campsite, its flames dancing with an almost mesmerizing rhythm. The sound of burning wood was a symphony of popping and hissing, Sparks burst forth intermittently, ascending into the darkness like fiery stars before fading into oblivion.

Athelstan stood still, his face half covered, as he watched the flames envelop the debris and slowly come to life. The wood creaked along with the crackling flames.

Trying to join in the conversation is a difficulty for my words stumble about my mind crawling on its hands and knees to answer his call. The way his eyes move down my flesh is that of a snake slithering downward with a torturous slowness savouring every inch of my skin. I slide the tips of my fingers upon my flesh hoping to soothe the burning, to calm the wildfire that erupts within me. But his fire is raging and wild, one that cannot be extinguished.

My body remained numb and useless not that movement would help me in this situation. Then the man stepped closer. He leaned toward the cross and let the burning tip touch the base of the wooden cross. At first, it was almost… quiet, like a soft hiss. A thin line of fire snaked its way along the dry wood. My breath hitched. So this was it. The fire caught faster than I expected. It spread swiftly, crawling upward on the wood. The heat around me grew drastically as the fire grew nearer. I stared at it, numbly.

It was slow motion but so fast that I couldn’t form a single word in my mind. Between the time he dropped the match and the time the entire room was on fire was longer than you think. My eyes followed the fire as it traveled around the room but it was still so fast that a huge gust of hot air blew my hair all over. Black smoke circled around me, filling my lungs and making it hard to see.

The fire, spewing a flurry of golden embers as it consumed another mossy log that had been thrust into its seductive flames. There was a popping and hissing that burst forth that accompanied the conversation of the people who had been drawn to surround its heat. Their faces illuminated by the flames that sprung up from the pit, they cast grim shadows upon the wearied complexions of the strangers as they spoke.
