I say quietly, needing to talk about anything normal to extend this moment out before the guilt crashes back in full force.
He lets out a low chuckle that vibrates right through my ribs. “Dumb college move. I was twenty one and thought I was hot shit, king of the mountain.” He sighs “Caught an edge, and slammed straight into a tree. I broke my collarbone, a couple ribs, spent forever in a sling looking like an idiot.” His hand comes up and covers mine, guiding my fingertip along the whole length of it.
“Little Jane was always curious about the scar, until I told her how I got it.” His voice goes all fond and faraway, and I feel that pebble drop in my stomach again.
