And immediately, her whole body felt sparked, consumed by raging fire, like dry tinder sparked by lightning. Behind him, she saw the famous Piazza San Marco, toward the tall red campanile and the famous domed white basilica that was as exotic as anything in Cairo or Istanbul. The hour was late, the night was magic, the tourists had melted away into the mists, leaving the two of them alone, drenched in moonlight beside the water.

It was a way to welcome the guests with warmth as the surrounding would be cold as soon as they entered the area of the mountainsides. But the two souls seemed to have found the warmth they were longing for in the embrace of each others' arms. The light from the fire made the place even more romantic. Words were lost. Their souls seemed to connect. Or it may only be the lust that ruled above their sanity, but neither of the two wanted to sober up and stop whatever they were about to do.

It was a red bandana tied to a low hanging branch. I veered off in that direction where the branches got thicker and before reaching the clearing the smell of death reached me. It was a viscus smell in the way it seemed to cling to my body as if pulling me deeper into its depths. As we came to the clearing the scene before us was shocking. There were six dead wolves lying haphazardly on the snow covered grass. From the looks of it they were killed brutally. There was blood splattered everywhere. The rotting corpses smelled much like Mitch and Cal. I was sure this was their pack mates dead before me. If Cal and Mitch had made it here they would likely be lying here dead as well.

The world didn't know they existed and they were relatively harmless so there was no need to be secluded from society. No glowing eyes or fangs or wolf forms. Just the gift of sometimes seeing the future. They aged normally like humans. The town just happened to be the place where most of the young women came to understand their gifts and then integrate themselves into society. A training school, Aiden had called it. We drove until we reached an estate hidden away in the forest on the outskirts of the town. Aiden parked the car in front of the large gate. "Welcome to Idris" He whispered so close to my ear that I jumped from my seat and nearly hit my head on the window.

Before long, she found herself enjoying the beauty of the forest. Many of the leaves were tinged with the yellow and russet which presaged the approaching fall. Dappled light, like gold coins, coloured the forest floor and the scent of pine resin rose from cushions of slender green needles as she walked over them. The grey-brown bulk of the settlement was visible through the trees and she kept it always on her right, making certain that she did not venture too far into the wilderness where tribes of unfriendly natives dwelt.

The wound in the sky widened until it no longer looked like a tear but a second horizon, jagged and hungry. The stars bled through it, wrong and twisted, constellations that had never belonged to this world forming shapes that watched, judged, and beckoned. From that wound, the Hollow poured.

I turn to look at him, his wide eyes watching my every move. “Holy shit, my mate is a badass,” he whispers, probably not realizing he said it out loud. I chuckle, kneeling down next to where Brax laid out the blankets. I bury my fingers in the dirt, whispering a soft plea for softness, before moss blankets the ground.
