It was cooler than I had imagined and thicker, as though each grain was laden with magic… Or maybe that was where Ophois had disposed of Benny’s friend.
Beki barked at me to hurry, but there was no sense of urgency or panic in her voice. My wolf seemed to think this was a fun game, even though she had seen what had happened to the other wizard. By now, the sand was chest-high, and felt like concrete. I pushed my hands into its damp depths, feeling around for something solid.
“You’ll have to go further inside than that,” said the wolf god, his voice giddy with amusement. “Alternatively, you could give up, and I will open up a path into the realm of Hades.”
