Before I could heave relief, the number flickered, its color switching to pink. Was I supposed to interpret the color as love or affection? I should correct myself. The shade of pink was too intense. The digits soared. Not stopping at 1,000, the value climbed to 5,000, then 9,999+.

"That's too far! Maeve's family doesn't have much. She just wanted to borrow your books. What gives you the right to treat her like that? You think having money makes you better than everyone?
