Fool Me Once
My heart was racing, thudding against my chest with each thud, every stifled breath as fear tried to engulf me.
The man across from me said not a word, his face serene, a mask in the dim interior of the car. His name badge read Special Agent Hendricks, and though his face was calm, his eyes were watchful and wary.
"Nothing I've done was wrong," I finally said, trying it out.
He raised an eyebrow. "You sure about that, Miss Jones?"
I was trembling. "What do you mean?"
He hunched forward, knees under his elbows, and looked at me. "You've put yourself right in the middle of something unpleasant, kid. Jeffery Richards has some big guns he has on his side."
