More Than Roommates
Penelope keeps pace easily, wheels whispering over the pavement beside us.
“You’re doing well,” she tells me. “Both of you.”
Penelope lingers, taps a notebook she had gifted Alex from the abundance of her heart once.
“Fill the first page with something honest,” she says. “Not impressive.”
Alex nods. “I will.”
She looks at me. “Take care of him.”
“I am and I will continue to,” I say.
She studies my face like she’s deciding whether to believe me, then she smiles.
“I know.”
Back in the dorm, Alex sets the notebook on the desk gently, like it might break if he doesn’t.
