Jack stirred, sat up, and stretched his arms above his head before rubbing his eyes and yawning deeply. He blinked at the building before him - he had never seen one so tall up close - and found himself strangely drawn to the concrete lions guarding each side of the front steps, their stone faces frozen in silent, watchful poses.
"Where are we?" he asked, his voice thick with sleep.
"The orphanage," Alice said softly.
Mr. Lyle came around and opened the door with a tired sigh. Alice climbed out first, and Jack followed, his legs stiff from the long car ride.
