CHAPTER 50 ************ "Blood on the Border" Alera’s POV “The Southern Border?” Rex questioned the patrol wolf again. When the wolf nodded in confirmation, Rex turned to me, his expression hardening. “Stay here, Alera. I have some pressing matters to attend to.” “But—” I didn’t get the chance to finish. A loud groan sounded right beside me, deep and guttural, followed by the sickening crack of bones shifting. My breath caught.

I said, turning a fierce look toward Alice. Before I could demand more answers, Alice began to change. Her form softened, blurring at the edges as if she were made of wax. She started melting away. Her eyes locked onto Alexei’s one last time, and she flashed him a dark, knowing smirk before dissolving into nothingness. “What...?” I gasped. The spot where she had stood was empty. I lunged forward, but Alexei caught me, holding me firmly. “Did you see that? Did you see what just happened?” I cried, panic rising in my throat.

“Tell him we’ll help. Get whatever info he’s got—where she might be, what she looks like.” Lucas nodded, jotting it down on his phone. I didn’t care much about Marcus, but a missing wolf was trouble, and I didn’t want Silverlight’s mess spilling into my territory. Before Lucas could say more, one of my enforcers, Gabe, stuck his head through the door. “Alpha, got a minute? Some rogues are sniffing around the east border. Nothing major, but we should check it out.” I sighed. Always something. “Take care of it, Gabe. Grab a couple guys, run them off. And watch for any Silverlight wolves sneaking around. I don’t trust those guys.”

Cassius climbed the steps beside me. “The eastern patrol just returned.” I nodded absently. “Anything unusual?” He hesitated. “Nothing dangerous.” That single pause was enough. “But?” “They picked up an unfamiliar wolf scent near the eastern stream.” Every muscle in my body tightened. “Rogue?” Cassius shook his head. “No.” “Then whose?” “They couldn’t tell.” Draven growled low. I stepped forward, my presence no longer hidden. “You always did have a sharp sense of the unseen,” I said gently. Alina turned her head slightly, just enough to glance at me. Her eyes were red-rimmed, lashes wet. “Was it that loud?” she asked, voice hoarse. “No,” I replied. “But it was deep. The forest doesn’t echo unless it needs to.” She laughed, bitter and soft. “Well. At least I’ve made myself memorable.” I knelt across from her, letting the creek separate us. The moonlight pooled between us, silver and soft, casting shadows on her face that made her look older than her years.

Blondes again. “Hi! Joshua, I haven’t seen you in a while.” One of them said. My eyes darted to my brother, who just nodded his head at me and guided River away while I remained beside Joshua. I was restraining Nala from letting her claws out while I remained composed. I interrupted Joshua as he was about to respond to the girl whose lipstick was redder than mine. “Hi! I’m Alice. I’m Joshua’s girlfriend.” I could have introduced myself as his Luna, but the females in front of us were humans.
