I managed, my voice barely above a whisper.
Grace looked down, her shoulders slumping as she mumbled, “I must sound so strange to you right now. I’m scared, Alaina. I’m scared that once you feel too comfortable with these people, you’ll forget about me.”
We stopped at the corner, and I turned to face her, confusion tightening in my chest. “Grace, what’s going on with you? You’re not acting like yourself.”
She shook her head, tears brimming in her eyes. “I didn’t want to tell you because I didn’t want to ruin your dreams. I see how much you want to be a leader, to prove yourself, to get the Alpha’s attention for something real.”
