End of Chapter 45 ---

Now she is gone forever. Memory after memory hits me until I am so dizzy that I can’t even stand. My legs giveaway and I fall onto my knees. The stranger who bumped into me says nothing. He just keeps walking, not helping me up and not saying excuse me. I know the reason he doesn’t help me, so it doesn’t bother me that he didn’t. Life has made him bitter. He doesn’t care about me. He doesn’t care about anybody. But today is extra hard for him, because it’s been four years exactly since his mother passed away, and I can literally feel his heart breaking as if it were my own heart. I want to shed a tear for him, but when I look up, my mom and three sisters are all standing over me.

His eyes were wild, and there was something unhinged about his movements as he staggered toward me, grabbing my hand. "Alana," he said, "I know you still love me. Let's go register our marriage right now." I pulled my hand free and stared at him. "I'm already married to Jace," I said. "We're even planning to have a baby. Don't you think it's time to let go?" For a moment, he just stood there, stunned. Then his face twisted with pain. "I've lost everything," he rasped. "I've paid for what I did. Don't you think you can forgive me now? Or maybe… maybe we can try to be reborn again?"

A few late commuters hurried past, but no one paid attention to a little girl pulling a suitcase by herself. The streetlights stretched my shadow and the suitcase's shadow long across the pavement. The truth was, I no longer remembered exactly where the children's home was. I only had a blurry sense that it was somewhere west, so I kept walking that way. By the fourth intersection, my arm ached so badly I could barely lift it. The crosswalk was wide. Halfway across, the suitcase wheel caught in a dip in the road. I pulled, but it would not move. So I crouched down and tried to lift it free.

This was really too much. Felix saw Emma out, then returned to the library. But before he could launch into his inquisition, Francis for in first. “You didn’t tell me you had inherited four wards.” “Well, I have,” said Felix, flinging himself into an armchair opposite the one his brother had resumed. “Are they all like that?” asked Francis in awe. Felix needed no explanation of what “that” meant. He answered with a groan, “Worse!” Eyes round, Francis did not make the mistake of imagining the other Fleming sisters were antidotes. His gaze rested on his brother for a moment, then his face created into a wide smile. “Good lord!”

So, Rafael doused the place in some of my perfume. Rafael had been direct this time around. Tried so many times to touch my hand or hold me close. But there was a barrier between us. Something that stopped me from fully giving in just yet. It would take time but he had made it clear that time was all we had. Slipping into the fourth gate, I swiveled my head around. Only a few other people came into the atrium. Grabbed for their bags greedily. None of them took notice of my presence. I was a wallflower. Dressed like one as well. I had opted for comfort instead of fashion.

She would usually do it herself but now that she wasn't here, Anthony felt lost. He decided to distract himself from thinking about her by watching some TV, but it got boring real soon. "Mr. DeMarco, sorry to bother you again." It was the housekeeper again. Anthony looked at her. "You are not bothering me. Is there something wrong?" he asked. "No sir, nothing is wrong. I just found this book lying on the ground. I figured it could be something important, so I thought I would give this to you," she said and handed him a red leather-bound book that looked like a journal.

I walked down the aisle avoiding eye contact with anyone, did I just see people with their tongues inside each other's mouth, in the middle of a walkway? I arrived in front of room 74, there was a large metal in front and I raised it using it to knock. I heard a sound and then a girl opened it, she eyed me. “Who the f**k are you?” She asked, her eyes were ice grey and piercing. “Your new roommate?” I asked and she stared at me again. Are you being serious?” She asked and I nodded before she groaned. “Phoebe, number three is here” she groaned and opened the door wide so I could come in.
