It took me a few minutes, but finally, the lock clicked open. But as I finally reached the inner labs, the full extent of the horror that was taking place hit me like a sledgehammer. The sight before me was unbearable, and I could not help but feel a sense of overwhelming sadness and disgust. Animals of all shapes and sizes were being held captive in small cages, stacked on top of each other in a cramped and dirty space. They were hooked up to machines, some were beeping and flashing with an array of colorful lights, others were pumping fluids or gases into the animals' bodies.

Khloe’s POV: The room where the cages were was a fairly large one. It resembled a garage with its cement walls and floor. This too was different from my previous visits, as was the pungent smell of bleach that the room contained. The cages were set in a horseshoe shape around the room and were pretty much the exact size that I thought they would be. Eight feet across, four feet back, and about five feet tall. Just barely enough room for each of us to have a little room to ourselves as long as we were sitting down.

Then Elise flipped the light switch on and Lucas stopped thinking about the smell. The brightly lit barn was full of creatures, like Noah’s Ark with a slightly less efficient counting system. One side of the space seemed to be for larger animals—a few deer and a sway-backed horse shared a pen, and there was something shuffling around in the enclosure next to them that looked a lot like a porcupine. The middle section was lined with wire cages large enough for a person to stand in, and Lucas could see a raccoon in the closest one. The cage was small, only enough room to fit five, maybe six people in it at one time. Besides the one knocked out on the floor and the shadows figure with the snake eyes. There were two other beings trapped in the cage. One who was the size of a child curled up on the woman's lap. The woman, who was either their mother or someone tasked with taking care of them, continued to hum a low tune while running their fingers through the child's hair.

Many times it has been called innocent with a touch of mischief and that's all. I do not know if it is that little mischief that forced me to search the cartons in the room. My mouth hung open when I realized that there were weapons inside the stuffed dolls. Some of them, I did not understand but I know a gun when I see one - not a toy gun. A real gun. I also know a pen knife used to carve chickens in pieceful gatherings which is always used to carve higher animals when the need arises. Yesterday and two days before, it was just water I had. I don't know if it is what my captor understands by change of meal or maybe she is punishing me for the sins she knows I will commit.

The cage the girl was shoved into was small, but clean. There was no rust or sharp edges on the wire cage. Some were downright scary, with large teeth and eyes that glowed in the dark. Dark colors donned their skin with signs that hung on the cages that said, ‘do not touch.’ One cage held a large horse-like creature, but instead of four legs, it only had two and a large tail replacing the hind legs. “Look, Luci! It’s a merhorse!” I giggled as its nose came closer to the cage. I nuzzled it and cooed at the bright yellow animal with hints of scales on its body.
