I could feel it. I was next in line for the position of the Alpha. It was two months till the Carmella, and I'd not yet found my mate. I was going to suffer for being the freak of the Pack. This was a big crime. Anyone who ever happened to pass their eighteenth year without finding their mate, here in the South Pack, was considered an anomaly. They were always banished, while the unfortunate ones ended up being killed. I swallowed hard at the thought. A knock on the door jerked me away from my thought. "Come in," I said in a placid tone, sensing it was my mother. I watched in the mirror as the door swung aside and true to my expectation, it was her.

“There might be more of a response if you contacted them directly. You know how they feel about werewolf society and hierarchies.” Damn it! I threw down the reports that I was looking over. He was right. I hated dealing with the hunters and their society. They were cowards, hiding behind stolen magic of witches they’d hunted down in the past. If it wasn’t for the need for peace, I would have happily moved toward wiping them out. As alpha of the strongest pack in North America, I knew that I could unite our packs and rid our continent of them if I really wanted to. But how many innocent lives would be lost if we went to war with the hunters?

I let her words settle in the air as I thought to myself. A lean, grizzled man behind her added, “We served your father. Tyran Demartel. Alpha of Moonstone pack. We failed to protect him in the moments that mattered, failed to find you, his daughter to extend that protection as well but this time, we're not hoping to fail again.” A few of them lifted their heads. There was no shame in their faces, only unbridled grit. Every one of them looked at me like I was not just a potential Alpha to them, but I was their last chance.

But I do not flinch. I do not give in. Finally, the collapses to the ground, spent. The other guard approaches me. I yank him to the ground. I am on top of him. I pin him. My sisters gasp. "I could kill you," I say. "Stop!" a voice calls from behind. "You will not kill him." I turn to look behind me. It is the wolf from the forest. The Alpha.

" How dare you touch my mate!" He roars out angrily , shifting into his massive wolf form and lunging at mark. Mark whimpers and shifts into his smaller wolf form, defending himself. Xavier's wolf is a massive five foot nine Alpha with brown fur while mark was a grey wolf, five foot at best. He is big for a gamma wolf. But what is a gamma wolf before an Alpha wolf. An Alpha wolf who has lost all reasoning to begin with. Chaos erupts, the other wolves try to separate them only to be on the receiving end of his wrath. I hear some muttering about calling the alpha, as for me, I'm just seething with anger.

Did the Alpha remember that he was on a lunch date with her and decided to dump me because, of course, I was just one of his warriors and nothing important? Why did I even take the time to wait for everyone to leave the clearing before grabbing this red flag where we raised it? I wanted to show Alpha Ledger that my team won, as I said I would, through this flag. But maybe I missed him, and he went ahead to lunch with Auri. “Lunch?” Emman asked, motioning with his thumb toward the building as he stepped back. He was the future Gamma of Blood Moon Pack, where Luna Amara was originally from.
