Her punishment was over and it was time to return, but there was an eighteen-year-old boy who had been with her for three years. My shadows had informed me about him. I told them to get rid of that boy, yet he was standing just fine in front of me. “Who is the boy standing beside you?” I asked Celeste again. I turned. Frost sat on the other end of the bench, one leg crossed over the other, hands resting on his knee. He wore the same clothes he'd had on the first time I saw him. His hair was pure white, longer than most men kept it, hanging past his jaw in a way that made him look younger than he was. His skin was pale. Not sickly pale. Just pale, like he'd never seen sun in his life. He was smiling at me. My chest tightened.
