(Damon’s POV) The old border outpost had been abandoned for years. Rotting wood. Broken windows. The scent of decay and neglect. It sat at the edge of neutral territory, a ghost of a time when Silver Creek and Shadow Ridge had been allies instead of enemies. Valerie had chosen it deliberately. Neutral ground. No pack advantage. Just her, and us, and the man she’d taken. “She’s inside,” Amara said. We were crouched in the tree line, fifty yards from the outpost. The moon was high, full, almost, casting silver light across the clearing. I could see the flicker of a fire through the broken windows.

“I remember she had a close friend, Miriam. They were inseparable. If anyone knows what happened to her, it should be her. I'm sure Elizabeth must have said something to her.” She paused, before continuing. “You'll find her in the southern part of Ravelle. Amber woke up as if she came from a good sleep. She feels peaceful. She feels like she is full of energy. "It's a beautiful morning." She stretched her arms with a sweet smile on her face. But her smile vanished immediately when she realized she is in an unfamillar place. "Where am I?" The last thing she remembered is when she was inside the Villacorda company building. She also remembers that she lost consciousness and fall into someone's arm. She automatically roam her eyes around.

The boys love their gifts and Amber leaves happily. She arrives home to find a note from her mum telling her she is out with the women’s group and that she’ll be back later. Amber sends a text to Grant telling him she is home and about to take a soak in the tub. But her mother hasn’t dried the floor to well after having a shower and Amber slips banging her head again. She loses consciousness just for a short time. When she wakes up she picks up her phone and calls Grant.

I understand, but Amber, the world is a dangerous place; you have to be careful. I don't want anyone taking advantage of your innocent heart.” Valerie smiled, letting go of Amber’s hands, and wiped the tears that had fallen down her face. “I'm sorry,” Valerie said and placed her hand around Amber's shoulders. “Let's get out of here; it's dark in here.” Amber nodded, and they made their way out of the basement.

Out on Angell Island, the river witch Valeska gazed into her oracle and uttered “Aah, no . . . ” hoarsely, shuffling to her front door and letting the russet-red fox named Pearl outside before sitting back down, gold wedding ring over her thumb, to caress the child’s coloring book laid open on the tabletop in front of her.

Amber smiled and took a sip from her bourbon, she’d be waiting patiently.
