My throat was on fire as I drew in a fresh breath, coughing at my attempt to get oxygen back in my system.

He barked. “You don’t get to make those decisions for me!..” I retorted, my voice laced with anger and pure disgust. He scoffed and rubbed his nose, closing the distance between us as every step felt like a trap I was falling into. Our bodies grew close and I could feel the heat of his tensed nerves. Before I could think fast, his hand found my neck and grabbed it, but not tight enough that I found it difficult to breathe. He held it so gently, it almost felt like he was scared he’d hurt me.
