“Look, I just... I know what it’s like to be out here, struggling. I thought joining the base was my ticket out—and seeing you fight? I figured you deserved the same chance. Better, even.”
Casey studied him. His sincerity seemed genuine, and while he wasn’t exactly the picture of strength, there was something honest about his awkwardness.
“Fine,” she said at last. “I’ll check it out. But if this turns out to be some kind of scam—”
“It’s not,” Andrew interrupted, raising his hands in surrender. “Promise.”
“Good.” Casey’s lips curved into a faint, almost imperceptible smirk. “Lead the way, then.”
As they walked, Andrew glanced sideways at her. “By the way, I’m Andrew.”
