His dark eyes softened at the sight of my tears. “Angel,” he murmured. “We must go. I’ll carry you.” He shoved a rag between my lips. “Bite down. This will hurt.” The clang of steel filled the room as he uncovered the hidden trapdoor, a relic of my grandfather’s wars. Cold air rushed from below, damp and suffocating, smelling of earth and secrets.

Angel was dumbfounded. She knew that she asked for her father to appear in front of her out from nowhere but she never imagined that it will come true. It felt kind of creepy. Wait a minute…… she must be hallucinating. Her dad has never cared to come and see her, let alone eat dinner with her or take her to school. He was always away minding his own business as if she was an invisible inconvenient.
