Aiden nodded and followed the man in. The room was beautiful and neat, with a great view of the lake and mountain in the distance. Uncle Jin said, “See that mural there?” Aiden turned his attention to see a beautiful Japanese mural on the wall. It was of a beautiful girl with long silky black hair and pale skin, wearing numerous layers of colorful kimonos. Surrounding her were some sort of spiritual animals—a golden dragon, a silver fox, a white snake, and a black cat. “That’s a beautiful piece,” Aiden said.

Flames burst from its mouth in uneven streaks of orange. “Thank you,” I told him as well. He tried to suppress his reaction, but the corner of his lips betrayed him, lifting into a small, proud smile. And in that moment, standing there with their drawings in my hands, something inside me shifted. Deeply. Dangerously. I felt… blessed.

I love it.” He pushed out a real smile, “Can you draw?” he asked. “Stick figures and crooked stars. But I’m a fast learner.”She replied with a shrug. Unhesitatingly, Junior dug in his backpack, pulling out a marker, and handing it to her like a silent invitation.
