Edith was annoyed, but when she noticed that I was awake, she raised her eyebrows proudly and took a bite of the fruit. Evelyn's face lit up with joy. "I've removed the pits from the cherries for you." I opened my dry lips and hoarsely called out, "Mom." Though Evelyn had her back to me, I could feel her smile freeze. After a long silence, she spoke coldly. "Now that you're awake, you should go home. The hospital charges for the bed." Stunned, I looked at the IV in Edith's hand, but I had nothing.

The doctor reported it was likely caused by intense emotional stress. He was unconscious for three days and nights, but he kept murmuring names in his sleep. Sometimes it was Rachel. Sometimes it was Stella. His parents were worried sick. Three days later, Ethan finally woke up. His mother rushed to his bedside. "Ethan, thank goodness! You scared me. You've been out for three days!" She then noticed something strange. Ethan looked like a completely different person. Her hands shook as she grabbed his arm. "Ethan, are you okay?"

I wake up because I feel the day coming. I stay still for a minute, listening. Our apartment smells like coffee already, which means Papa is up.
