I slipped from my room, a shadow among shadows, and went not toward the front gates, but deeper into the heart of the lodge, to a place I had only ever visited in daylight: the old training annex.
It was a dusty, echoing space at the back of the armory, used mostly for storing broken equipment and old pelts. But along one wall, forgotten by everyone, was a lineup of worn wooden training dummies. And in a rusting rack, there were several old, chipped practice swords, discarded when the warriors graduated to steel.
