I showered quickly, and came back down to find them both in the living room, Anna reading aloud from a picture book Grace was clearly too young to follow but seemed to enjoy anyway, captivated by the sound of her mother's voice more than any actual story.
I stood in the doorway a moment before joining them, simply watching, struck by the particular, quiet beauty of an ordinary scene neither of us would have dared take for granted a year ago, a mother and daughter, unhurried, safe, nothing waiting on the other side of the morning except more mornings exactly like it.
