After a while, Anna gets up from her bed, gathers some clothes from her wardrobe and goes to take a shower. When she emerges from the bathroom, she is wearing a long-sleeve, loose-fitting shirt in a soft grey colour. The word, ‘dream’ along with a star design, is printed on it in a darker shade of grey. Her pyjama bottoms are also loose-fitting and feature horizontal stripes in alternating shades of light grey and white. Her hair is damp from the shower, and she walks over to her desk and picks up her laptop. She places it on the bed, then gets her biology textbook out of her purple backpack. Small and neat and completely unremarkable in the specific way of people who had spent decades being professionally unremarkable because their survival depended on nobody looking at them twice. Like it was nothing, the three of them got completely naked right there in the backyard. "Scarlett!" Ariana said, covering her eyes, like seeing her naked sister might burn her retinas right out. I'd forgotten that Ariana hadn't witnessed Scarlett's earlier adventures. Ariana was still picturing her innocent little sister, rather than the sultry sexpot that Scarlett had revealed herself to be.

The realisation hit Jessica harder than expected. Because she remembered that feeling. Remembered it perfectly. One application remained on her desk long after the others had been sorted. Anna was furious now, and yet her fire was the most glamorous weapon of them all. It flickers with all its honor; maybe that was why she was so delighted with it. The passion along with the welcoming feel of it bestows, but as she approaches it deep inside her, it snarls and bites. Her inner demons were trying to emerge and want her to acknowledge its darkness.
