The message preview lit up across the top of the phone. A video icon. And the name I hadn’t saved under any nickname. Just Knox. Knox: (Video) And beneath it, those damning words: Thought about you the whole time. My stomach dropped. I lurched forward before I even knew what I was doing, practically yanking the phone from Jared’s hands. “Whoa!” he laughed. “What was that?” “Sorry! That was Lana,” I laughed too, but mine was tight, shaky, manic. “She’s been spamming me with wedding memes. One of them nearly crashed my phone earlier, swear.”

It didn’t take me long to figure out what was going on—Jaxon was going viral. “This is going to be fun,” Kade chuckled and then kissed my cheek. “I’ll see you later.” I watched him disappear and then kept walking. I stopped in front of a locker to peel off one of the stickers. It was a cartoonish meme of Jaxon, complete with exaggerated wide eyes and a speech bubble that read: "Bidding $5000 on an ex? Obsessed much?" I scoffed, shaking my head. The next one was even worse—"Jaxon’s Punch: Weakest Move of the Year."

Zara’s POV Knox Henderson is laughing across the room with a beer in his hand and I’m three vodka sodas deep, wondering which would feel better: punching him or ruining him. Six months ago, he took a photo of me passed out at a party. Marker on my face, skirt ridden up with my ass on display. He posted it to a group chat of sixty people with the caption “scholarship girls can’t hang.” For two weeks, I was a campus meme. Giggles in the dining hall. Screenshots on every platform.

She said with a smile. I was helpless. I know if I wanted to hear those words from her mouth, I had to continue working hard. “Alright, I hung up then.” Ailina hung up the phone. Then she sent me a naughty expression of a little rabbit baring her teeth. I usually didn’t use Memes when using W******p. When I saw Ailina’s cute one, I didn’t know what to reply. So I found Jayden and asked him to get a few for me. As a result, the expression bags Jayden sent me were all very strange. All of them were silly with lines “Go to hell, Idiot”, “You go eat shit,” and “The other party didn’t want to talk to you and touch your tit.” Seeing this I almost went to beat him.

You’re a Luna now. Your public image matters more than your feelings. You need to show these people that you’re no longer a slave. You’re in charge now. Don’t show them fear. My vapidness would love to smack some sense in him. ‘Cheers!’ Another wrote with clinking glasses. His teeth would look better on the ground or better as toppings. ‘Can I have some?’ The following goes on. I'd like to have some of your arteries too. ‘Cheap drunks!’ You think you can afford the cheap in the wildest of your dreams. The netizens had a gala day sharing memes amongst themselves. I have become a laughingstock. It ranges from hilarious to disgustingly vulgar. For what? For outspeaking and spitting facts at a jerk's face. For standing up by the side of a vampiress who is forced to become his sex slave. For having opinions that do not reconcile. For wanting to be admired.

I’ve never been more proud of her. It’s like watching a poet of profanity find her muse. There are also messages from Rosalyn. From coworkers. Some kind. Some... vulture-like. Picking at the edges of my anxiety, pretending to check in while really just sniffing for gossip. I can’t deal with any of them. Not now. I scroll through Spotify and click my “Life Fucking Sucks” playlist. “Break Stuff” by Limp Bizkit blasts through the speaker. Middle school me is thriving.

The naivety both of them practiced to the insanity of this whole situation was infuriating. "How about nothing? I haven't seen him asking you to do anything at all.
