Maya's apartment building looked the same as it always had old brick, six floors, the lobby door that stuck when it rained. Kieran had been here a hundred times. But standing outside at 7 AM with a duffel bag and nowhere else to go, it felt different. He pressed the buzzer for apartment 4B. "Hello?" Maya's voice came through the speaker, groggy and confused. "It's me." Silence. Then: "Kieran?"

“This can’t be true. Isn’t Charlene a poor student? How could she afford it?” “That’s right. This apartment must belong to Jacob. He drives an expensive car, and he dresses in luxury brands. I went up to the fourth floor and I shook my head as I laughed in the elevator. The doors opened up and I turned left. Their apartment was the third one and I knocked. Joseph Wilson opened the door and looked me up and down.

"I... I should come with you. For safety." Julian ignored her and strode toward the peeling front door of the apartment building. He looked like a wolf entering a sheep pen—out of place, dangerous, and predatory. They took the stairs to the fourth floor. The hallway smelled of boiled cabbage and old carpet. The kitchen is dated but functional. There’s a narrow hallway leading to two bedrooms. Seraphina walks through slowly and touches the walls like she’s testing if this place is real. She opens the door to the smaller bedroom and stands there looking at the empty space.

The grounds were immaculate, especially the middle courtyard. Opened wide, the yard was very spacious and green with many trees and plants. Even the governor’s flower garden would have pleased the Prince Regent. Several fountains littered the area, and only a few lanterns were lit. The half-moon added glimmer to the water in the fountains, making his walk breathtaking and very relaxing.

I kicked it open. "Stairs," I warned him. "Fourth floor." It was a nightmare. Every step was a battle. Julian hissed in pain with every movement, his face burying itself in the crook of my neck. I could feel the heat radiating off him. The fever was back. By the time we reached apartment 4B, I was sweating and shaking. I reached up to the top of the door frame. My fingers brushed dust until they found the cold metal of a key.

Jimmy commented shutting the car door. "It says here," Natalia said, looking over a slip of paper. "Alex lives in apartment 12 B." Jimmy thought the apartment number sounded familiar, "What was Osheys?" Natalia flipped a small writing pad over. "11 B, next store." "Well let's see if Alex remembers Oshey." Jimmy started climbing the exterior steps. He walked in silence to a door marked 12. He glanced over his shoulder to Natalia before knocking twice on the door. "Just a moment," a male voice from inside called out.

The white apartment door before us bore the number 12054, which, once translated, indicated our location: the 120th floor, apartment 54. As Alex and I stepped out from the capsule taxi to the balcony, it seamlessly closed its door behind us and departed, leaving us at the threshold of our new dwelling. The door to our apartment swung open in response to the proximity of our smartwatches.
