The apartment was on the fourth floor of a building that had seen better days. Probably in the seventies. I stood in the doorway with the last of my boxes, staring at the empty space that was supposed to be my fresh start. The walls were beige, that sad kind of beige that wasn’t trying to be neutral, just existing because no one had bothered to paint over it. The floor was worn hardwood, scratched and dull, with a stain near the window that looked suspiciously like old water damage.

Three. The apartment was on the border of Queens. It was above a bakery that smelled like burnt sugar and yeast. The lobby had no marble. It had linoleum that peeled at the corners like old skin. The elevator smelled of wet wool and industrial cleaner. I liked it. It was quiet. It was small. It didn't have room for a ghost or a CEO. The walls were thin. I could hear a television in 4B. A game show. The clapping was rhythmic. Mindless. I sat on the edge of the bed. The mattress was too soft. It lacked the firm resistance of the Vane estate. It gave too much.

Cheryl asks, walking over to Barry to look at the plans they had. “All the centre apartments will have 4 bedrooms and the corner apartments will have three” he says, laying the building plans on the ground for her to look at. “Why do you ask?” “I want apartment 83” Cheryl states, kneeling by Barry to look over the plans. “We are going to be neighbours” Leslie says, kneeling beside her. “We have our house on the market to purchase apartment 84. We have changed the layout slightly to have the main bathroom cojoining the two girl’s bedrooms.”

The kind of place that had character, sure, but definitely didn't have a doorman or a concierge service. Maya's apartment building looked the same as it always had old brick, six floors, the lobby door that stuck when it rained. Kieran had been here a hundred times. But standing outside at 7 AM with a duffel bag and nowhere else to go, it felt different. He pressed the buzzer for apartment 4B. "Hello?" Maya's voice came through the speaker, groggy and confused.
