The moon hung low in the night sky as the wind whispered through the trees, carrying with it the scent of pine and the distant, haunting cries of wolves. It was a scary calm, the kind that settled deep into the bones, reminding all who dared to listen that the storm was far from over.

Rushing in could lead to unforeseen dangers. Slowly, the blood disappeared, sinking deeper into the earth. The surreal sight made them wonder if the mountain truly required blood to reveal its secrets. The thought sent chills down their spines. One thing was certain though. This situation was more dangerous than it seemed. The golden mountain clearly hid countless threats, and moving forward without caution could be deadly.

I say, giving him a wide smile. When we were driving off, I saw the guy again, he stood by the end of the parking lot leaning against an old Chevy truck along with other guys and a few girls I have not seen around here. Maybe they were just passing by. But I have heard plenty of myths about there being people who live deeper into the mountains that don't come down much unless necessary. And they could be pretty weird. I mean, we live in the mountain nearby as well, but only about fifteen minutes drive up. No one dares go past the old trails because they say they have seen huge wolves up there that are incredibly ferocious and dangerous.

The wolves beneath the bridges are pacing back and forth in barely contained energy. There's fear in everyone's eyes. Beneath the hushed whispers and pacing feet, a quiet terror threads through the air. I can feel it in the unsteady rhythm of the collective heartbeats, the lingering stares at the older alpha that once stood before us and the terrifying expanse of the vast mountains.

"We'll stay alert. Keep our eyes forward." But the unsettling feeling wrapped around me like a cloak. The mountains felt alive, but not in a comforting way; they loomed over us, ancient and indifferent. I scanned the barren landscape, searching for any sign of life. Not even a single animal broke the stillness, as if the world itself had decided to retreat. I leaned closer to Seraphina, inhaling the familiar scent of her hair mixed with the leather of the saddle. "What do you think is out there?" I whispered, though I didn’t want to voice the fear creeping into my heart.

And before I could answer— The mountain shook again. But this time— The scream didn’t come from below. It came from above. The pack.

There are fights breaking out every few feet, people lashing out over the last piece of fire wood, or accusing one another of thefts and attacks. Utter dread fills me as I wait for the inevitable castigations from the other Alphas. And you want us to bring these wretches into our world? I imagine Kieran saying, with disdain dripping from his tongue. A crash sounds in the distance, and terrified screams break out as the humans whip around, searching for the source of the disturbance. It’s coming from the Northern mountains– the opposite direction of the shifter camps – and it sounds like nothing more than a rock slide. Scarlett’s POV As we ventured forth, the daunting beauty of the mountains unfolded before us. Majestic peaks pierced the sky, their snow-capped summits glistening under the morning sun. The air grew crisp and thin as we ascended higher, and our steps became more cautious as we navigated treacherous paths carved into the rugged terrain.

A scream tore through Lilith's lips, and she crawled away from the grave in sheer terror, panting heavily. As fear consumed her, Lilith felt a presence behind her. Slowly, she turned around, trembling with trepidation. To her astonishment, the dead girl stood there, her sad expression unchanged. They locked eyes, but the dead girl remained silent, her ghostly presence sending shivers down Lilith's spine. Overwhelmed by the sight of the apparition, Lilith rose to her feet and scrambled out of the woods, screaming in fear with each step.

I’d have to remember this place, and maybe come back someday. There hadn’t been much about this state that I had liked, but this place was akin to my little sanctuary. Just a lot bigger, and no trees. A lot of people had told me that I would enjoy the Black Hills, and they would remind me of the Appalachian Mountains in New England. I highly doubted it, though. Nothing could ever compare to those.
