For the first time, Halloween meant something. We stood together in the costume store, surrounded by rows of ridiculous outfits and glittering accessories. Shirley looked beautiful even in her regular clothes, and Abby? She was glowing with excitement. She ran from one display to the next, holding up tiaras and plastic wands, giving me advice like she was my personal fashion coach. At first, I had planned to go as a prince.
