I walked around the table, paused beside her chair, and rested a hand on her shoulder the way a loving sister would.
Then I leaned down and spoke near her ear, soft enough that only she could hear.
“That’s the problem.”
I felt her body go still under my hand.
I straightened, gave her one last perfect smile, and left the dining room.
Behind me, the silence was absolute.
Tomorrow the transfer would hit the system.
Chloe would reach for her first piece… and find nothing.
