Wolf Paws was at full steam after Sera’s group left. The school was a source for wolves that could be controlled and transformed. Director Dawood ordered that protections against and entry of enemies be made, with the help of Elora Abiyoe. There were machines and technologies ready to identify shadow wolves and other executioners. Also, her best students were on guard at the gate, ready to fight or call for help. Two wolves stood beneath an eclipsed moon—one black, one white. Tangled together. Bound. She took a slow breath. “They were more than mates.” Theoden’s jaw clenched.

The ground was slick with blood, and the once-pristine white snow was stained crimson. Mac shifted, my paws sinking into the snow as I sprinted to the left, where Archer’s pack was struggling to hold their ground. Archer’s massive wolf, a dark and imposing creature, was locked in combat with a hybrid, but the creature was too fast, too strong. Archer’s wolf roared, but it was cut short as the hybrid lunged for his throat. His teeth sank into Archer’s shoulder, and the Alpha’s wolf bucked, throwing the creature off just in time to avoid a fatal blow.

Then, my eyes lifted toward him. “Conan…” But whatever words I meant to say died on my lips. Another growl tore through the clearing. A second wolf stepped into the space, this one with white fur streaked with brown. My chest began beating faster. No. Archer. The Riverclaw Beta emerged from the shadows with a wild boar clamped in his jaw. He walked toward me, slow, deliberate, his eyes challenging. The pack’s murmurs turned into hushed confusion. He stopped right beside Conan and dropped the boar beside the stag.

"It's nothing. I'll heal." Arnold came over, his face creased with concern. "Those were wolves from the Shadow Pack," he said. "What were they doing here?”
