He steps down into the mud, wading into the shallows of the river. The water foams and splashes around him. I stare as he reaches down and scoops the water up, bringing it to his mouth.

“I hope you see that.” Aria stirred, her small palm pressing against my chest, as if answering. Later in the afternoon, when the heat grew heavier and the camp settled into a lull, I made a decision. The river. It lay a short walk from the clearing, winding through smooth stones and tall grasses. Clean. Cold. Safe. I changed Aria into a light wrap, securing her carefully against me, and headed out alone. The path was narrow but familiar. I’d scouted it myself when choosing this land. Birds scattered as I passed, and the scent of water grew stronger with each step.

Something tells me I’m going to find a vase for it and keep it for as long as it lives. “This really is beautiful. You must come down here a lot,” I say, looking out at the view. From here, we can see the North side of the mainland, and quite frankly, the most beautiful. The water glistens seafoam green and deep blue under the sun, few boats gliding over the surface. It almost makes me miss being home. Almost. “It’s especially nice at night. When it’s all getting too much I’ll come out here. Early evening, typically,” Ren tells me, glancing at me.

"Don't be." Thomas fell silent and crouched down near the river, splashing his face. The cool water slipped between his lips and made him shudder. It tasted so pure, soothing his raw throat and refreshing his skin. Even though the water met the sea, it had no taste of salt or any rot that the brine carried.
