Blinking harder, her gaze settled on the clear drip line taped to her skin, a slow stream of fluid flowing into her veins. Beside her bed, James Arthur was checking the IV bag hanging from a pole. “Glad to see you've regained consciousness, that shows you're getting better.” Heira slightly lifted her head to look at her foot which was already dressed and covered in bandages. “That has been taken care of, you do not need to worry. What you have to worry about is this,” he said grimly while handing a test result to her. “We've run some tests and we found out that your arrhythmia has gotten worse. The irregular heartbeat you've had for a while is more unstable now.”

And despite the warnings, despite the care they tried to show- everything they tried to fake as they told her to run, urging her not to fall for their own sickly sweet words, they did everything they warned her about. Stealing her heart from her chest and ripping it to pieces, crushing her spirit between their fingers and smiling as they handed the damage back to her, apologizing for the shards they had made of her shattered heart's remains. And even as they sliced up her being, she accepted the pieces with open arms and a kind smile, thanking them for returning it once they were through. Her heart had been beaten and bruised, becoming nothing more than a scarred up organ she carried around

“You would like me to meet him?” she asked softly. “Yes,” Garrett replied as he brushed her off her face. The silence filled the room as they stared at each other in the low light of the room now. The couch was near the furthest place in the room from the light in the corner of the room. Though it was open, this was a corner that was just for him to relax and unwind during the day. He knew the placement was off, but it worked for him. “I think you, out of everyone in the world, need one person who can show you how to love again.”

"I never expected this. I just did what I thought was right. I never thought it would mean so much to other people." I walked from one arrangement to another, reading each card, smiling at every sweet word written on them. I hugged some of the arrangements, kissed their petals, and felt overwhelming happiness. "I'm so happy. They're all so kind. They're all so thoughtful." Alexandro stood beside me, his eyes following my every move. I saw his slightly awkward expression, and I wondered what he was thinking. "Ale, look at this!" I said, pointing to a heart-shaped floral arrangement. "This is so beautiful! And look at this one, my favorite flowers! How did they know?"

Xavier says, kissing her cheek. "You're gonna see mines now?" Harley says, looking up at Xavier. With a smile, Xavier kisses his nose and replies. "Yes, I'm gonna look at yours." he says, grabbing his card. He opens his card to reveal a drawing of five little stick figures of him, Christine, Kai, me, and Xavier and he drew our names above all our heads with a heart in the middle of all of us. "Thank you, bubba. I love it." he says, kissing his head and hugging all of them.

“You didn’t lose everything, Em.” I looked up at her. “Didn’t I?” Alyssa reached across the table, covering my hand with hers. “You’ve still got yourself. And Ray’s still out there, isn’t he?” I nodded slowly. “We’re taking time. Space.” She raised an eyebrow. “And how’s that working out for your heart?” I didn’t answer.

“Fine. Then don’t blame me either. But you will face what you’ve done.” She reached into her purse and pulled out a sleek black envelope. Without hesitation, she strode to his desk and slammed the wedding invitation onto the polished wood, making the glass of whiskey tremble. Vincent’s gaze dropped to it, but he didn’t touch it. “I’ll expect you to honor it,” she said, her voice cutting through the silence like a blade. “Your daughter is walking into an arranged marriage because of you. Your little princess is marrying your enemy because of you.”

On the inside of the box, there was a small '9' written on it. I already had the chest in my hands. "We don't know the order, though." Megera mumbled. I scanned the cards. The inside of the box had a 9, the two diamond with the number 6, the four hearts with the number 3, the 9 spades with the number 0.

"At least I would know exactly what I injured myself looking at." I scoffed and faced forward. But I couldn't help but notice my cheeks been warm. I told myself it's the evening air but I knew it wasn't. I stopped when the garden came into view. There was a table at the centre covered in a deep cloth, two chairs dressed in matching fabric facing each other. Flowers had been arranged along the edges, real ones, their colours soft in the fading light. The whole thing was careful and beautiful and nothing at all like what I had been expecting.
