I tried to answer, to tell him to get up, to make sense of the spinning lights, but the world folded over me like a closing book. I went down. The last thing I registered before the dark closed in was the shape of the truck’s grill, monstrously close, and the staccato beat of a heart far too loud to be mine. Then nothing but a roar and the tidy, awful finality of falling. ~~~ Light. Too much of it. It burned against my eyelids like fire, dragging me out of the kind of darkness that didn’t feel like sleep — more like nothingness. The air around me hummed with machines, sterile and cold, and my body felt… wrong. Heavy. Distant.

Her cathedral. She slouched into her best corner chair—stuffed, tufted velvet in tired blue—pullding out a book from her tote. A quiet night's reading before bed was now her ritual, and for tonight, she opened what was familiar and comforting: *The Light Between Oceans*. The book always bore its imprint on her. Loss. Forgiveness. Breaking and binding decisions. She opened to the top of it, and the world disintegrated. Somewhere in the city—several stories above, in a steel and glass building—Julian Blackwood lay in his dark, sleek bedroom, staring at the book she had given him.

It wasn't until she noticed the strange book tucked away in the corner that she was able to distract herself from her thoughts. "I almost missed one," she whispered. As she walked over to it, she noticed that its cover was worn, and it seemed to emit a faint glow that caught her attention. Maybe it's how the moon perfectly acted as its own spotlight that made it seem so glowy, but it's not just that. She somehow felt a little hint of amusement as she stared at it. As she approached the book, she saw the shinny title written on it, Lunaria, and she couldn't help but be intrigued. The moonlight shining down on the pages illuminated the words in a way that made them seem to come alive.

Unfortunately the price for it was very high and had ended and destroyed many lives. We left the administration wing behind Anton in silence and marched across the area to a further set back building that looked very similar to the first one. Of course, Reese lit a cigarette, as soon as he was outdoors and only because he didn't let go of my hand, I realized that his thoughts were on me and the upcoming encounter. He probably feared that I would freak out or try to shoot them. Unfortunately I had to admit that I was no stranger to this idea. I had no idea what it would be like to face these proles. Maybe it left me completely cold.

Then I laughed, i have lost my damn mind. I close the book. Toss it back on the desk. Turn off the light. I don’t expect anything to happen. But when I wake up the next morning… something has.

We rode through the night. The library was dark when we returned. The candles had burned out, and the only light came from the moon through the high windows. Lysander lit them with a flick of his wrist, his movements quick, almost frantic. He pulled books from the shelves—old books, books we had not touched in weeks—and spread them across the table.

We'd complete our night routine before going to sleep. it was two in the morning, too early to wake up, when I felt the empty, cold space beside me. I rubbed my eyes and adjusted to the darkness. I saw a faint light coming from the working table in the corner of the room, next to the bookshelf. It was the glow of a laptop. and there was Lazarus, focused and engrossed in his work. He was in profile, and I could clearly see his straight nose and how the light from his laptop illuminated his handsome face. He was shirtless, wearing only his boxers.

I can feel myself filling from my toes to the top of my head, making me feel almost light as air. A blinding light shoots out from my very soul and fills every crevice in the canyon. The shadows are sent flying with a warped scream into the night as the stars and moon start to shine brighter than they have in a long time. The floating sensation suddenly dissipates, and I'm caught by Liam. "Easy. I got you, Lewana". I'm exhausted and struggling to keep my eyes open. They fly open when a familiar cold shiver runs straight through my chest. One last desperate attempt of the shadows to put the fear of them back in me.

Pain exploded through me, and I curled up instinctively. They dragged me back to the warehouse. The man spat on the ground in disgust before storming out, leaving me alone with my fading consciousness. After what felt like an eternity, the heavy iron door creaked open, and Elliott Reynolds stepped in, silhouetted against the light. His familiar, nonchalant drawl broke the silence. "Wow, look at you. A few days out of sight and you turn into a total mess."
