Katherine’s Manuscript — Chapter 1 I didn’t expect to fall in love with Damien Richard. Arranged marriages are not designed for love. They are designed for stability. Alliances. Convenience. My parents explained this to me the morning they told me I was getting married. I remember the sunlight coming through the dining room windows while my mother stirred her tea like this was a perfectly ordinary conversation. “The Richards are a respectable family,” she said calmly. My father nodded in agreement. And that was it. That was how my marriage was decided.

None of this did anything to soothe Raina's nerves. Raina picked one out of the four bonded contracts. With a bit of a quivering hand, she opened the page that described in detail the terms and conditions of the contract. The title was bold and clear - "Contract for Arranged Marriage". The first paragraph listed the names of the two parties involved, followed by a detailed description of the terms and conditions of the arrangement. Raina felt a sense of numbness as she read the words as if her heart had been put on pause. - That the marriage would be strictly a business arrangement, with no intimacy involved.

"An arranged marriage to expand their business?" Nate nodded his head and looked at him, "Yes, they are really determined to do this arrangement." "We need to do the arrangement with Marianne before the Lao's," Nate nodded his head with a smile. "Alright."

It's beyond damage! "It's an arranged marriage. I need to do this for my family." He spits out. Mental blink! Arranged what!? What sort of a preposterous absurdity is this? Arranged marriage?! I thought those ridiculous things used to happen back in the 17th era? During the times of our fore-ancestors. We are in the 21st century for God's sake! Who in this era would be this old-school to come up with such insanities? And what straight man in this era would agree to be bound by such a ridiculous thing?

“I called the people on your list for you, and I took the liberty of assembling a sample floral arrangement.” Ray slid into the seat next to him and looked it over. “It’s beautiful.” Melo smiled, obviously pleased by the compliment. “I based it on your color scheme. All these flowers will provide an atmosphere of happiness and will bless the union to be a long and faithful one. They will not die either, but they will grow larger if they are removed from their container and transplanted into the earth.” “How many will there be?” “Enough that the guests may take them as favors.”

I can’t have my wife dating other men.” “And you won’t see other women.” She said it like a statement, not a question. “Aye, you’ll be my moon and stars, lass.” “I don’t see how we’re going to do this today. We need a license, an officiant.” I placed the envelope on the table. “Taken care of.” She opened the flap and pulled out the marriage license I’d applied for, both of our names already written down. “Are you serious? You knew I’d say yes?”
