The cold knife sank into my body, and I collapsed at my cousin Monica Newman's feet. Blood kept pouring out of me, soaking through the carpet. Even as I died, I couldn't understand it. She was the one who had begged me over and over to steal her papers from her mother so that she could get married. Yet now that her life wasn't as comfortable as she had hoped, she blamed everything on me, claiming that I had pushed her into getting married. As my body grew colder and colder, Monica's cruel curses faded along with my breath.

“I’m just thankful that we are still your mates, I was worried that things would end up being different with you not being a fallen.” I shook my head in shock. “What’s a fallen?” “They were angels in past lives and they’re used as tools to combat demons. They’re extremely rare because they’re normally killed off but you had survived. Baby, what I’m telling you is the truth.” He said. “This is a bit much for me to digest honestly, I barely know any of you.” I told him. A fallen? What’s he going on about things being different? "You haven't slept properly in days. Your brain is frying." Elara turned her laptop towards her. "Then explain this." On the screen was a new chapter. One she hadn't written. One that hadn't existed an hour ago. Fallon read the first line aloud. "She thinks I don't see her panic. But I feed on it." She looked up slowly. "Is this supposed to be funny?" Elara whispered, "I never typed that." As if on cue, a new sentence appeared on the screen. Typed. Slowly. Letter by letter:

Turning around with a raised brow, I smirked. "I didn't even know you could read," "Oh, ha ha," Arrow rolled his deep brown eyes, taking a John Keats leather bound book off the shelf. A true smile rose to my lips at seeing this. "You like John Keats?" "The one and only," Placing my book back, Arrow leaned his back against the shelf and flipped to a random page. "Is there another life? Shall I awake and find all this a dream? There must be, we cannot be created for this sort of suffering."

Line, aim, release. Four falls in seconds and now the women start to scatter, huddling in groups and looking around probably knowing they are next. I am here to help them, not kill them. “Who the fuck is that?” one of the men bellows before he looks in my direction. The moment he looks at me, I release the arrow and it goes straight to his eye. Thud. He falls down and now the women all look at me, and I wave them away. “hide! There are more!”

And of course, at the very far end of that spectrum, were the god forsaken werewolf hunters. Raine shoved that train of thought down. There was only pain there, and she would not let herself spiral in the middle of a fantasy aisle. Sucking in deep breaths, Raine reached back up to return the novel, standing on her tiptoes to slot it in properly. She lost her footing, swayed on the shelf, and knocked a couple of books out of their space.

“And I’m not letting him take you.” Not a threat. Not a promise. Something else entirely. Something that made her heart twist painfully. The gallery emptied slowly as evening settled over the city. Outside, streetlights flickered against the fog, painting Downtown in muted gold and gray. Inside, Elara sat alone at her desk, staring at a half-finished report she couldn’t focus on. Her mind wouldn’t settle. Every time she tried to think about her work, her thoughts tangled around Lucian’s closeness…and Damien’s stare.

His breath on my neck almost distracted me as my stomach coiled with want. Lena shot her last arrow. I watched, followed the arrow with my eyes, and when she released, the arrow never came. I looked around, but it never came. Then I saw Grace, about fifteen feet before us. She fell on her knees, then fell to the ground, the arrow deep in her chest. I glared at Lena, who stood there with a proud smile playing on her lips. I ran to Grace; her dress was already soaked in her blood as she lay unconscious.

The flickering lamplight cast long shadows across the room, mirroring the turmoil within Lena's heart. The evening stretched on, seemingly endless, as Lena remained motionless on the couch, lost in her thoughts and consumed by the rawness of her emotions. The tears continued to fall, each drop a testament to the shattered dreams and the love that had turned to ashes.

The arrow had already been let loose and he didn’t have time to load another before I crashed into him. Toppling over I landed on top of him, but not for long. As quick as it happened, he was on top of me, crossbow at my throat, I bucked my hips under him forcing him off balance. Leaning diagonally, I sat up and elbowed him in his side. I knocked him just enough to give me an advantage, I followed it up with a quick elbow to the side of his neck, completely knocking him off me. I flipped onto my stomach as he got to his feet and aimed a kick at his knees, he managed to evade me and shot downward, I felt a sting on my leg and jumped to my feet, eyes wide looking at him.
