Chapter Twelve The rain had been relentless all Friday. Sheets of water fell from the sky, drumming against windows and rooftops, as if the heavens themselves were mourning or warning. Nora sat in the art studio, trying desperately to focus on her presentation, but her brush hovered uselessly over the canvas. The colours and lines felt meaningless. Every stroke of paint blurred, smudged by the storm of emotions inside her.

She was curious and her curiosity was killing her just so much to the point that she could not hold it in. “ Oh that, actually he is talking about…” He suddenly pushed her out of the way, she fell down, shocked but when she looked up her eyes widened, an arrow sunk into his chest!

The first arrow missed Lyra by less than an inch. It buried itself in the bookshelf behind her with a violent thunk, sending splinters and loose pages flying into the dark. For one stunned heartbeat, all she could hear was her own breathing. Then the library exploded into motion. Cassian shoved the overturned table higher, turning it into a shield as more arrows punched through the shattered windows. Glass rained across the carpet in glittering red shards, painted crimson by the blood moon climbing outside.

The girl crawled further, choosing one of the opponents for herself. At the same moment, another of the attackers collapsed on his back, immediately hidden by a snowdrift. A couple of attackers stopped, noticing something was wrong. And Arleta immediately rushed at one of them. The girl rose from the snow like a snake. A deft and accurate blow in a wide arc ended right under the collarbone of one of the men. He wheezed, absurdly waved his arms, fell, thrashed in convulsions. And the girl was already turning around to the second, when a long thin arrow dug into her body from the back, forcing her to stagger, easily stitching through her cloak and thick leather trigger.

I looked down. It was an arrow. The point was sticking right out of me. I reached down and held it. But…but where had it come from? Who had shot it? My vision went blurry. “No, hold on,” I told myself. I stumbled forward, then I fell onto my knees. I heard people calling my name. An arrow? Through the back? I fell forward, but then I chuckled to myself. “Nice try,” I whispered, “but it will take a lot more than an arrow to kill me.”

Each arrow flew from her bow, her aim deadly. Finally, one arrow found its mark, sinking deep into the creature’s flesh. It howled in rage, staggering, and Violet decided to take the advantage of its, firing volley after volley. Her arrows pierced its limbs and chest, and with a final, ear-splitting roar, the creature collapsed, shaking the earth as it fell.
