Chapter: 8 ****** The day flew by in a blur, with Asher immersed in the case files, searching for any link or pattern to crack the case. However, despite his best efforts, his mind kept drifting back to Kaidën. For reasons he couldn't fathom, Asher found himself longing to see the man again. He was half-expecting someone to inform him of a visitor waiting outside the station. The feelings were inexplicable, but they lingered, refusing to be shaken off, no matter how deeply he buried himself in work.

I'm suddenly jerked out of thought, as I walk into the kitchen, feet padding against the linoleum. Asher is standing under a small light, shirtless and sipping from a glass of water. We meet gazes for a good moment, before he smiles, chuckling slightly. "Alpha of Purity, huh Dawn? Would have never thought you to be the one. Or should I say, his one," Asher teases, and I narrow my eyes on him. Making sure I'm not to close, I rest against the bench closest to me. "Fate, fight?"

“What have you been eating—sunshine and wolf magic?” “I missed you so much,” Dawn said, wrapping her tiny arms around Elena’s neck. “Are you gonna stay forever now?” Elena froze for just a heartbeat—then smiled, brushing a hand through Dawn’s curls. “Yes. I’m not going anywhere.” Asher watched the scene unfold, his heart doing that unfamiliar but increasingly frequent flutter. He turned as Jacob stepped up beside him, resting a hand on his shoulder. “She’s something, huh?” Asher nodded without looking away. “Yeah.”

Slap! Jaxon’s right cheek burned. He was woken up from the chain of the past that still trapped him from time to time. His eyes regained clarity. Looking down at her who was practically in his arms, his hanging heart settled down. The clog in his throat vanished as if it was never there in the first place. “What are you doing?!” Ashley shrieked, desperately distancing herself from him but to no avail she was only met by a fierce force as if he wanted to embed her body into his, never to be separated again.

Chapter 7 Wendy’s POV The look on Asher’s face is one of pure shock and disbelief. He definitely underestimated me too much. I know I went out of my way to get that exact thing done but I had to teach him a lesson. I was dealing with a lot of idiot boys already and I shouldn’t have to get the same ass behavior from my so called mentor. I can’t help but smirk evilly at the success of a well executed plan. Asher is livid and the rest 9f the mentees are just staring in wide eyed shock. They may have worked out that it was me and I could sense that they knew of the tension between us already from the way I interrupted his lessons and now this.

He reached out with a withered, gnarled hand—trying to grasp me, to touch my face one last time. "I'm... so... sorry..." His lips moved, soundless, forming those three words—too late by a lifetime. But his hand fell, limp and lifeless, against the freezing floor. And in that instant, as his eyes closed for good, my spirit dissolved—scattering like starlight into the endless snow. Every debt, every grudge, every wound—all of it faded into dust. If there is a next life, Father, let us never meet again.

Tears streamed down my face, dripping into my father's ashes and staining them dark. I did not wipe my face. I did not respond to Stella. I did not look at Hudson, who stood beside her with an undisguised smirk. I reached out with trembling hands, gathering the ashes little by little, trying to put them back into the urn. "I'm sorry, Dad... I'm so sorry... this is my fault..." Hudson had his arm around Stella's waist. He let out a theatrical sigh. "Damon, don't take it too hard. The man is already dead. Besides, this was your own carelessness..."

Alex, for the first time, looked truly afraid. Dawn turned away from him and walked back toward me. Pride filled my chest as I watched her. "You heard her," I growled. "If you so much as breathe in her direction again, I’ll finish what I started." He scrambled to his feet, his gaze flicking between me and Dawn. Without another word, he turned and fled, disappearing into the forest. I watched him go, my hands itching to chase him down and finish it. Reading my mind, Dawn placed a hand on my chest. "Thank you," she said softly.

The sky cracked faintly with thunder in the distance and I was ahead for a minute. “Time to go home…” By the time I reached the house, dusk had started to settle.. From the distance I could see faint lights flickering from inside as it felt warm and soft through the windowpanes. For a moment, I almost didn’t want to go in. I wanted to keep walking until I forgot the sound of their voices, until I forgot the look in Ashley’s eyes when I lied and said I was fine. But I pushed the door open anyway. Ashley was standing by the table, her shawl draped loosely around her shoulders. She turned the moment she heard the door.

Austin smirked, looking at her in a challenging manner. “I’m out of here. I’m sorry, Ash. We can catch up later.” She had an apologetic look and came over to give me a hug. I was too tired to put up a fight with her. I hugged her back and she said her goodbyes to Jake and Dan while giving Austin a death glare. I saw her leaving through the door while Austin looked like he was about to punch someone. How did a perfect evening turn into a mess? I rested my head on my hands, letting out a breath. “I’m gonna head out too. Take care, Ash.” Austin stood up and kissed my forehead. I smiled at him as he said his goodbyes, leaving in a rush.
