CASSANDRA That night, as I studied the map Helene had given me, I put together all of the information I’d been presented with and made several speculations. First, the name of the poison that had infected Asher was likely Inferno, not Black Marks. Asher had received it far too long ago, and if the infected in Wild Crawler were any indication, he would have deteriorated already if Raven’s recreation was in his veins. Of course, if it was in fact Inferno, why hadn’t it taken effect right away?

I glanced at Asher and he shrugged complacently. Fuck. This was so awks!

I wanted to see the man who had discarded me look up from the dirt and realize who had truly destroyed him. Asher’s heavy SUV roared down the concrete ramp, entering the garage with a deafening screech of tires. He killed the engine, slammed the door, and strode toward us, his massive frame still dripping with rainwater and grease from the perimeter sweep. His dark shirt was torn at the shoulder, revealing the hard, scarred muscle beneath.

Aetherion Academy towers above me. It's carved into the cliffs like it belongs there—stone and iron and something older woven through it. Massive archways stretch toward the sky, banners snapping in the wind, dark against the gray-blue backdrop. Flickering golden lights spill out of the windows and all around. Like you can literally see the magic alive here. It's beautiful.

She replied, leaning into the couch. “Fine. How about I just bring you tea? Or coffee?” I offered. She stood up and placed her hands on the waist of the shorts. “You know what you should do? Bring me some alcohol or fuel. I'm burning this ugly thing.”

"You're letting her back in? After what she—" "Calm down, Chelley. Enough now," he said. Shana offered a weak, trembling nod, leaning on Cassandra as she stood up. She played the part to perfection, stumbling slightly as she began to walk toward the elevator. Victory was written in the slight slump of her shoulders—she was back in the house. Suddenly we heard Asher’s cough. Everyone froze. The doctor’s hands paused over the small chest. Asher’s body jerked, his small frame convulsing as he coughed up a lungful of chlorinated water. His eyes fluttered open, red-rimmed and unfocused, as he let out a weak, frightened whimper.

Then Ashen whispered, voice shaking— “I see them.” Hamish leaned forward. “Describe it.” “Solven is shadow,” Ashen murmured. “Cold. Heavy. Structured.” “And Ateron?” Hamish asked. “Fire,” Ashen breathed. “Wild. Bright. Fast.” Hamish nodded. “And the balance?” Ashen’s voice softened to a near reverent whisper. “Gold. Whole. Calm. Like it understands both without choosing either.” Hamish lowered his staff slowly. “Now ask it what it wants you to do.”

A faint smile curved her lips, but there was nothing warm in it. Ashleigh Dana sat beside Voss, her hair shifting in soft ripples of color I couldn’t read yet, pale gold at the roots, bleeding into streaks of copper and violet. Her attention was fixed on me, a quiet alertness beneath her otherwise casual posture. Of all of them, she felt the least threatening, though I knew she could be the most unpredictable.
